complete 460 rebuild

have 1978 460 i am told there were 4 models made in that year or close to it and i was told this is the second from the best. I didnt really know the difference, but i went on ahead and bought the son of a gun. This is my first rebuild and was told this site is the place for answers. The engine is completely apart and i am getting it acid dipped , resurfaced and honed out. I want to replace the cam, pistons, and manafold. what are the cheapest was to go without sacraficing horsepower.!!! Where should i begin!!!! any ideas would be helpful.

Re: complete 460 rebuild

The first place I'd start, is with the shop that you're having do the machining.
If they're at all "on the ball", they will already know what works and what doesn't as far as mods go.

Speaking of which, now's the time to decide.
Stock rebuild?
A little added "oomph".
Major added "oomph".
What you're using the engine for, determines what parts will go into it.
There are a lot of good kits available that have all the necessary internal components and gaskets.
You'll usually save quite a bit of money going that route.
In addition, there are several matched cam/intake manifolds available now.
Look up Edelbrock "Performer" and Holley "SystemMax".

Are you doing the final assembly yourself?
