loud tick

When I lay on the gas I have a loud tick coming from the passenger side of the engine. What could it be and how do you fix?

Re: loud tick

If it IS a tick and not a knock and ONLY happens under hard acceleration, i would suspect an exhaust leak at the flange or somewhere close to the manifold.

Does it do it also in park or only in gear?

Re: loud tick

What type of truck?/
My 92 bronco did this.
It was the small pipe that is use by the air pump to pump fresh air into the exhaust before the cat.
Its between the motor and the firewall. Hard to get at and repair. About 91 dollars CND from a dealer.

Only made a tick under acceleration.

Re: loud tick

Is it carbed? What size engine? My 83 351w currently has an exhaust leak that ticks on accelleration. There is a little plate on the pass. side of the intake manifold. It is meant for two little tubes to go to the choke on the carb to heat the choke spring. My carb has an electric choke so there are no tubes. The gasket under the plate blew out and exhaust is leaking through the two tiny holes.

The trouble with being on top...You always have to look over your shoulder. The best never rest. Fear the FORD thunder!!!

Re: loud tick

my 93 is like MudLake's problem... loud taptaptaptap under acceleration... it's a burned out check valve in the emissions system, and it's letting raw exhaust dump out into the engine compartment. to check it out, when you first start your truck in the morning, reach behind the engine in the middle and feel around and see if you feel hot exhaust dumping out back there. just a thought, it could be an internal problem but this is likely too.

Your Toy is loaded huh? Does it have Power Engine?

Re: loud tick

It only does it when I am eccelerating. When I come of the gas it is quiet like a mouse. I was told it is my manifold gasket. Now is there two gaskets on the manifold and how hard are they to change.

Re: loud tick

If its at the flange on the manifold, there is no gasket. Its possible one of the studs snapped or if not you can loosen the flange, reposition it and retorque. Use *blaster* penetrant on the nuts.

I doubt its the gasket between the head and the manifold (but i guess its possible) if its leaking from the motor torqing over on acceleration. If its that loud, it would probably leak ALL the time. Look for a crack in the manifold or maybe the Y-pipe also.

Get in there with a MAGlight and look for black carbon deposits to pin point the source. the manifold gasket is easy to change once you get the smog plumbing outa the way.
