If the Bronco\'s knockin, I ain\'t rockin

Is that noise I hear everytime the old 88 (302) Bronco shifts up a knock? It's getting worse and worse. Doesn't seem to knock when I'm on the gas, but light-medium throttle after an upshift, on even the slightest hill gets a knocking noise. The truck has 120,000 miles, compression is good, and it has the 3 speed OD auto.

Any ideas? If it is a knock, what do you all suggest? (And don't say premium gas cause I can't afford it.) What's the timing on these babies anyway? Thanks as usual!

Brad

I dont use premium but i DO use mid grade. My 86 w/5.0 has always required at least mid-grade. I would always get a little ping with regular.

Also maybe your Knock sensor is defective ,its right behind no.6 intake runner on the lower intake manifold.

Timing is 10 degrees BTDC, remove the SPOUT connector before setting it, diaghram should be under hood somewhere(mine is above the grill in front of the radiator)...

on an 88, the knock sensor is in the block behind the intake manifold, up top. the boss is still in the intake, but it was moved to the block, i belive to limit outside noise pickup.

Ahhh! i didnt know that, although Havack mentioned something about that a while back ago. BUT if you have speakers as big as Sixlitres, that might create a problem.

Re: If the Bronco\'s knockin, I ain\'t rockin

Hehehe, that's right

Slowly going deaf as I wait for my new 4 channel amp from the states to arrive so I can finish the job. The old Denon can only run 6 of the speakers at a time. At least it's more reliable since I ran a new 6 gauge power wire and direct to battery ground wire under the rug into the console.

The 86 gets 89 octane ethanol as we get it for the same price as 87 regular unleaded here. I don't remember the 302 rattling on 87 though.

Good luck figuring out the detonation, sounds like the guys have given you some good ideas. You could just crank the tunes and forget about those poor piston rings.
