Re: fuel mileage of a 302?

I have an 86 w/ 302, and AOD- it gets 12 highway, 11 in town, 10 playin' aound. The only mod is a KNN drop in filter.

Re: fuel mileage of a 302?

With my freshly bored out rebuilt engine, i get around 12 city/15-16 hwy. With the tired"cylinder worn" old eng, 10 city/12 hwy...

Re: fuel mileage of a 302?

I have an '86 302EFI with AOD freshly ohauled in good tune. Stock except for K&N filter and 3" single cat Dynamax flowthrough muffler, stock tires and I get 14-15 overall. But then, I didn't buy it for the gas mileage. I pull my boat, takes me hunting, etc. If I want to get somewhere and get good gas mileage, I take my Honda.

Re: fuel mileage of an Avalanche?

I just saw an article in the paper today (test drive: 2002 avalanche). It lists that heavy ugly pig getting 21 MPG city and 28 MPG hwy with the 285 horsepower 5.3L!

Now i know our aging broncos have OLD technology motors in em, but come on, how can that THING possibly get THAT kind of mileage?

Re: fuel mileage of an Avalanche?

It probably only weighs 3000 lbs. Looks like it's all plastic.

Re: fuel mileage of an Avalanche?

It's in the way the vehicle is tested for CAFE. It is the most idiotic thing I have seen. The vehicle idles, with no load for a preset amount of time (putting this very simply). Emissions are then measured, and fuel economy is calculated from that. That is the official economy listed on the window sticker. This is also the reason that you get about 3-5 mpg less than sticker (reality -vs- statistical). It's all a game.
Big reason between fuel economy in 2001 vs 1980/1990's is the efficiency of the electronics for combustion. Sensors, and computer have gotten faster, and more sophisticated. Aerodynamics play a part, as well as material wieght.
BTW, my 1990, modified 302 gets 17 mpg hwy (75 -80 mph) (15.5 pulling my trailer 65-70 mph), 14 -15 city.

Re: fuel mileage of an Avalanche?

An avalanche is a suburban chassis with the plastic body. It is also probably very aerodynamic with the unibody and the ugly sloped front end.

I never knew that Ron-bo...
