Loose Front Left Axle Shaft

When searching out the source of a rubbing/grinding noise in my left front axle, I noticed that the axle shaft moved up and down its axis. The Right Front Axle doesn't move at all, so I am thinking that this could be the source of the noise. What can I do to fix this problem and if anyone has any tips to make the job easier. BTW, I have a 84 XLT 4X4.

Thanks in advance for your advice, Thomas.

Re: Loose Front Left Axle Shaft

The driver's axle is only retained by the snap-ring on the axle stub behind the hub lock - there's nothing inside the diff that keeps it from moving in & out. If the yoke inside the knuckle going into the spindle is tight, but the shaft going toward the diff is loose, you have a bad U-joint. Repairing this requires completly dimantling the knuckle. If they slide as a unit, the snap-ring is missing or out of its groove. You only have to pull the 6 hub lock screws to get to this.
