sparkly transfercase oil

I changed the fluid in my transfercase and it came out a little metallicky. Its been a while since the last change(5 years),but unfortunately, it dont see much in 4wd either!
anyways, my question, is this normal? and does the chain in there turn even when in 2H? Its an 86 with 138k on it.

Re: sparkly transfercase oil

I would put a magnet in the oil to see if it really is metal. I don't think the chain moves until it is in 4wd.

Re: sparkly transfercase oil

It looks gold in color, is there anything made out of brass inside? like the annulus or the sun gear? I didnt think the chain moved, but was just wondering what might be wearing.
