My 85 is making a nasty ticking noise

I swear I just saw a topic about a ticking bronco, but all I see now is the "Ticking Noise-Still" topic. Anyway, It just started this up within the last couple weeks. It ticks like crazy, with engine speed. I just did a tune-up and carb rebuild, and it is running great except for the tick. I cant seem to tell where it is comming from, except its in the engine compartment, not drive-train. I have rebuilt the carb, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, PCV valve, Breather filter, fuel filter, and air filter. Any off the top ideas on things to check out. I would be compelled to say its somthing to do with valves, lifters, pushrods, along those lines, but not sure.

How to do a compression test

Do a compression test. It should identify valvetrain problems. See the attached Word document on how to.

Re: My 85 is making a nasty ticking noise

Sure its not exhaust? The carb could have a small leak around the manifold? Just a small thought

Could be valves/lifters. Seems to me 9 times out of 10 that what it is. (just a tired set of heads)

Re: My 85 is making a nasty ticking noise

Well, I am for sure its not exhaust. I know an exhaust leak when I hear it, and I am 99% sure this is not one. I just rebuilt the carb, so I am doubting problems with it already. Right after the carb rebuilt, but before the ticking noise started I did a compression test. All cyliners came out between 94-103 PSI. Which suprised me since this engine has 257K on it, and it still runs pretty good. I am leaning tword problems in the heads and valves. If I get some time I will do another compression test this weekend if it doesnt snow again. Thanks
