Strange hissing noise?

I have a '86 XLT with 302 EFI I have a hissing noise possibly coming from powerbooster for brakes I haven't gotten off my ass to get a book yet, I had a mechanic tell me it was "A ford thing"?? I've had Fords before never encountered this before. Do I need to replace booster?

Re: Strange hissing noise?

Possibly, but first, cut a 2-3' section of water hose, put one end to your ear, and move the other end around until you find where the sound is the loudest. That's where the leak is. If it's at a fitting, see if you can tighten it or push the hose fully on/in. If it's coming from the seam of the booster, replace it.

Be careful of that cat that you ran over and got caught in the fenderwells, though.

Re: Strange hissing noise?

Check your vacuum lines too, all the way up to the intake manifold.

mine hisses too, but it does it for 3 to 4 seconds after i turn off the truck...and tapers off when it's almost done. is this natural or do i have some sort of a leak? it seemed to come from somewhere near the solenoids by the fuel rail on the drive side

It's a Jeep thing? My Bronco thing will run over your little Jeep thing.

Re: Strange hissing noise?

Yes, you have a leak, and yes, it's normal. The vacuum reservoir glued to the side of the evaporator housing (the lump under the shiny insulation pad over the R exhaust manifold) is sucking in air from a leak, probably at the vacuum manifold on the firewall over the intake. But you can do the same thing to diagnose it: use a piece of hose as a stethoscope.

Re: Strange hissing noise?

Thank you for the help everybody. Um, it is coming from around where the push rod goes into it. I guess I should be looking for a power booster.
And Thank you again. P.S. I'm also going make sure I don't ask that mechanic anything anymore too.
