steering almost got me killed

Nevermind, it wasn't that bad...but this next story is definitely worth a look.

Another note on steering. One time I was in a creek bed and got stuck and buried up to the hubs in gravel. If your truck is like mine there's a gap between the plastic and the coil tower so that you can throw mud and rocks in there when the wheel is turned. Well I managed to get a large rock stuck in the same joint and it kept me from being able to steer. Luckily, I was doign 5 mph at the time but that could have been bad too.
OK, enough serious stuff...time to get back to chevy bashing on MIKE.S's post

Re: steering almost got me killed

Well, after clearing the mud I realized it was a rubber piece that was ruined, not metal. I took it all apart and now I see that even if that rubber fails the metal bracket will keep it from completely disconnecting. Where can I get a replacement for this rubber? It's riveted to the shaft so I guess the whole thing has to be replaced (dammit!). anybody ever encountered this?

It's called the rag joint and you can get a good one at a junkyard for less than $30 - up till '97, they're interchangeable.

Re: steering almost got me killed

OK...got it finished. Went to FORD and they told me $107 for the joint...I said no thank you. Went to the junkyard and got the entire shaft off a 96 ext cab for 20 bucks. Has about 3 more inches in there so if I put on a body lift sometime.

Re: steering almost got me killed

I am late in here, but this board is the hardest to get into of my favorites.

The rag joint or flexible coupler is available at most auto parts stores, for $10 or so. Look in the HELP display. Make sure you get the right size. You can take the entire lower shaft out, with this attached, by just removing the clamp bolt at the steering box and the bolt in the column sliding joint. It is fairly easy to change, but the original is riveted, so you have to grind the original rivets out, and put bolts back in. The kit comes with the bolts. I remember some difficulty getting the split spline clamping bolt back in with the kit bolts in, and had to leave one loose or something till it was back in the truck. Grind the head thinner maybe. I have done several of these, and have gotten able to country boy some of them.

Re: steering almost got me killed

I went to autozone and they only had two versions in the HELP section...both were way too different to make work.
