rear brakes won\'t stay tightened

Well, I've always heard that rear brakes don't matter much because most of your stopping is done on the front...i don't buy it. I can tell so much difference when I have the rear brakes adjusted. Problem is, the adjustor pawl that supposedly keeps the star adjustor from backing off is not even touching it, so they loosen up very quickly after I tighten the brakes up. It causes my front rotors to run pretty hot, but we're in the middle of this God-awful storm in Arkansas and I'd like to have all 4 corners helping out with the braking. Everything back there appears to be put on correctly..any ideas?

It's a Jeep thing? My Bronco thing will run over your little Jeep thing.

Re: rear brakes won\'t stay tightened

Hey buddy, Ive got the same prob. I just slid through an intersection cuz the brakes in the rear werent working. The torque of the truck just kept pushing the rear tires and making the fronts slip. Ive adjusted the rear brakes 4 times the last couple weeks cuz im trying to get the posi to work better. I would like to know the solution to this prob also. Later

Dont like it? LICK ME!!!

Re: rear brakes won\'t stay tightened

Seems like everyone is having brake problems and like you guys, mine is in the back too!
1) Anytime I use the emergency brake my right rear wheel hangs up till I shut off for a while and crank back up? (haven't used it since I changed brakes a month ago)

2) Now, anytime I drive for a while in the city, it seems that the right rear wheel hangs up when I am in stop/go taffic?

--- Took everything down, adjusted and the problem still comes back?

Thanks.....

Re: rear brakes won\'t stay tightened

muddybronco: I've done a lot of brakes in my life and if the adjusting pawl is not touching, then something is wrong. I would check again just to be sure. Maybe even get someone else to check, to see if you may be overlooking the problem. The pawl needs to touch to be able to turn the star wheel.
notoj: If your brakes are hanging up after using your emergency brakes, then check the rear cables. I have had to replace mine twice in the last four years. Since it the right, it is probably that one. I would at least consider changing both. Price is not too bad, about $25 each.

Re: rear brakes won\'t stay tightened

I have had the same problem too. I have a '90 bronco w rear anti lock (that doesn't work). I replaced the brakes, got new drums, springs. Haven't had the problem since.

Re: rear brakes won\'t stay tightened

Alright, I know what I'll be doing after New Years, but how would the (emergency) cables effect my brakes when I am NOT using the emergency brake?

Thanks for the help...

Happy New Year....

Re: rear brakes won\'t stay tightened

I haven't had any problems with emergency brake I don't use it (ever). Don't even know if it works. I was told by a friend that Ford drums are known for <hot spots> when I replaced my stock drum and went with bendix I haven't had the grabbing that I had with stock.
Do you have a lift? Maybe if you do you need to adjust the cable??? just a thought.

My reply was based on this. If you use the emergency brake and then the brakes hang up, then look at the cables. Perhaps the cable is bad and the brake is very tight all of the time because it cannot release. This could cause the right rear to lock easily. This also does not affect the anti-locks since they read off of the ring gear. If only one wheel locks, the ABS will not be active.

Re: rear brakes won\'t stay tightened

Cool, Thanks for the clarification. I haven't been thinking straight for the past couple of days. (too many drinks I gues) Now, it all makes sense.

2) Also, should I change the rear brake return springs?(that pull the rear pads closed)
