Gearing for Power

I have an 1/2 ton 4x4 w/ a beefed up 400 and

38.5's tires. I have 3.54 gear ratio now and i'm

gonna change the ratio, but i'm wondering whats

a good ratio for more power. A friend told me to

go between 5.71 - 5.83 for what I do. My truck

is strictly a mud truck and also used for

and pulling people out. Any

feedback is appreciated. Later.

Don't belive in the living dead, well my truck's here.

Re: Gearing for Power

i have the same size tire (38.5 swampers), and plan on running 5.68's, but will have an aod for the extra gear on the highway. i suggest you check out for the right gearing chart.

Re: Gearing for Power

I don't know if I would do 5.71's, My personal choice would be 5.13's or 5.29's. That will bring you close to factory and favor the power side. Engine design will determine which one. If it is a low end torque monster, sway to the 5.13 side. If it make power at the higher RPM's, sway to the 5.29's.

This is all opinion.

If it ain't broke, I can probably still fix it.
