Mysterious Radiator Leak!

'96, 351, stock aluminum radiator with the plastic tank on the both sides.

I have an intermittent leak from the radiator that I can't track down. When it's first started cold and the thermostat hasn't opened, no leak. When it starts to warm up and the thermostat opens it starts leaking out the bottom very slowly, but enough to get your attention. All of the hoses are dry, the drain valve is dry, I can't see anything leaking down the sides. When it warms up completely, the leak stops. What gives? I guess I need to pull it out and pressure check it. Any other suggestions?

Re: Mysterious Radiator Leak!

yo Thump,
My 96 Bronco leaked the same way @ 52k miles a few weeks ago.
I ended up with a new Modine rad from Car Parts.
it had plastic type end caps too, but seems is the consensus among most local rad shops and even the ford dealer...

Manufacturer: MODINE * Prices are quoted in U.S Currency.
Description glossary Part Number List Price Your Price Core Price Qty Add to Cart
RADIATOR, W/AT; W/HDC 2183 .. $168.40
RADIATOR, W/AT, W/O HDC 2186 $179.81
RADIATOR, W/MT W/O HDC 896 ...$183.74

dealer wanted ~ $300.00 plus coolant, hoses, clamps, etc
local rad/air cond shop wanted $220.00 with coolant...

one dude once said he used pvc pipe. cut in half...lenth-wise and patched it..but, ......
btw, again..our 999 contour blew the caps at ony 22k miles.
good luck!
