any exhaust pros out there?

Hi all. My 78 is in desperate need of a new exhaust system. I was thinking of dual, 3 chamber flowmasters on 2 1/4" pipes. The exhaust manifolds are toast also so I need to replace them or install headers. Haven't decided which way to go yet, probably stick with manifolds, at least until I replace the 400 with a 427. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You wouldn't happen to recall what series your mufflers were? What size pipes?

Re: any exhaust pros out there?

Put it to you this way, you don't want something crazy loud! I didn't listen to what the guys said and went out "on my own" to get my exhaust done last week. Boy, $300.00 later and my truck now sounds like a race car. I cut out the cats, ran 2 1/2 from the manifolds into "1" series 40 flowmaster and out the sides on a 45 degree angle. Sounds great sitting there, but when I start going it breaks up too much and sounds like sh!t!
Now, does anyone have any ideas that could make my sound better? Add another muffler, smaller pipe?

Re: any exhaust pros out there?

my girlfriend had 2 1/4" duals with stock manifolds and two chamber flowmasters (the old style, not the delta flows) with the pipes after the mufflers missing (the guy she bought it from had a little too much off-road fun). the truck sounds fierce the way it is now, i think it would be a little milder with the pipes running all the way to the back...

2 chamber vs. 3 chamber is really goning to come down to a noise preference....both will sound good, but the 2 chambers will be louder

I would stick w/ 2 1/4" duals, and deffinately have the pipes routed over the rear axle and to the sides! if you like to roll down the rear window, don't run the pipes straight out the back, otherwise you'll be feeling the effects of carbon monoxide

Re: any exhaust pros out there?

I kept it simple and ran a single 3" from both manifolds back with a Dynomax muffler and it runs and sounds great. Dynomax is the same muffler widely used by NASCAR. I noticed a huge differenct in power when the rpms hit about 2500 rpms. My '91 came stock with a dual cat. that met with one muffler (why?????). I then changed it to a single universal cat. The Dynomax cost about $250 installed......If anyone does decide to run a dual straight out the back, the pipes could be pinch if you decide to do any serious offroading........woody
