new bronco owner ???s & seeks advise

I just got a 88 bronco, 300 6cyl with EFI and stick shift...It starts and runs, however the PO has a fuel line running from the fuel pump on the frame up to the filler tube and in to the tank. so i am guessing that the intank pump is bad....
is this intank pump needed?
This bronco will be a daily driver in a VERY remote area, where if one broke down it could be days before someone found you.
I would like to make it as reliable and simple as possiable.
would it be best to to swap to a carb and eliminate all the electronics...and if so what would be needed other than the obvious carb, manifold, and dist.
and what doner vehicles should i be hunting....
