Decisions to make...need your opinions

I have an 89 Bronco 5.0, AOD Trans (going bad), EB edition. The engine while I just replaced it runs pretty rough and I am getting sick of driving and tuning the darn thing. My father is getting ready to donate a 97 Explorer with a 5.0 and 4X4. If I have the explorer as a donor will the engine and tranny work in the Bronco? What do you think...good or bad idea?

Thanks all,
Josh

A 97 explorer will be a 4.6 Not a 5.0... 4.6's are junk and won't work in a bronco they have no power compared to a 5.0 and don't last.

No, that is wrong. Some Explorers came with a 5.0 even after 96 when the 4.6/5.4 era started. I know a guy that has one, says 5.0 right on top just like my truck does.

We know it is a 5.0 because we bought a new motor for it about 30k miles ago. So if I have it as a Donor all should be well?

The problem I see with this is that you will be using a tranny from the Explorer to pull around a Bronco... Assuming you use the tranny motor package that means you will also be using the computer, maf and electronics of the Explorer... Not a project I recommend for everyone...

It would be much simpler to just use the Explorer's long block in your current application... Good luck whatever you decide...

i agree. use the exploder long block and get your AOD replaced. there are a few websites that can build an AOD really stout for a good price. or look into a manual zf 5speed swap. that can be done for under a grand

That be correct alright

I heard there were 5.0 litres in the Exploders as late as 99. In the Ford Racing catalog, it mentions you're getting the Explorer high torque cam in the longblock, which is basically the entire Exploder 5.0 litre as it rolled off the last production line.

Great motor by all accounts. I'd like a 4.6, but I couldn't afford parts or service for one and there's still 10 times as much spped equipment available for 5.0 litres.

Why not just correct the problems with the original motor and trans in the Bronco and just drive it?
