9\" Rear ?\'s

First off, I am swapping a full width Dana 44 and Ford 9" into my Explorer. I was at the junkyard today and found a few 9" rear axles. I was planning on just getting the 44 & 9" from the same 78-79 Bronco or F150, but I can get this 9" for next to nothing. So my question is: What are the differences in the Ford 9" axle in a '83 F150, '81 F150, and the typical 78-79 F150/Broncos. (ie: width, brakes, etc.)

I have talked to a few people and they said that there was no difference in any of them. I just want to make sure before I buy it. One more question, does it matter what gears are in it currently? I know that some axles have different carriers that might need to be swapped out if it was changed to 4.88s (That's the ratio I'm going with). I know that the tag on the axle should say the current ratio, but it was too dirty to see the numbers. The '83's axle code on the door said 16, and the '81's code was 13. The only problem is I can't seem to find those codes on the internet.

If it turns out that I can use the axle out of one of those, I will be pulling it on Monday. Thanks for the help.

Re: 9\" Rear ?\'s

13= 4.10
16= 3.50
Go with the 4.10s. Try it out and if you still need more then go the 4.88s. How big of tires do you plan on running?

The only difference in the rear diffs will be that the 78/79 leaf perches will be mounted slightly narrower so for your ap it won't matter since you will have to reposition the spring perches anyway.

Re: 9\" Rear ?\'s

Dang. I looked at this thread too late. I ended up getting the axle from the 83(3.50s). I guess it's ok since I didn't even see that 81 there today. Kevin, it's alright. Tisma and Daniel went with me. We finally got the axle out, right as they were closing.

I plan on going with 35s to start with. Then I will be upgrading shafts/etc. and moving to 37s! So 4.56s would be a minimum for my little 4.0 V6(which I plan on keeping). I will start rebuilding and cleaning up the axle soon. Let me know if you happen to find any HP Dana 44 axles (78-79 Bronco/F150) that are local. BTW, it's Bryan not Brian. Re: 9\" Rear ?\'s

Norm, where did you get your info on the ratios? I just searched a little more and found on google(I was using MSN before) this: http://www.bronco.com/pmwiki/pmwiki....ificationCodes

According to that^^ the 13 code is not 4.10 and actually 2.75?!?

Re: 9\" Rear ?\'s

I got it from a guy that used to post here off of his site. I just tried the old link and it didn't work. I printed it out. Here's what it says:

Open diff
13 4.11
14 3.00
16 3.50
18 3.08
19 3.55

LIMITED SLIP

H3 4.11
H4 3.00
H5 4.10
H6 3.50
H8 3.08
H9 3.55

I don't want to detract from this site as I do like it but you will find alot of info on The ranger station
and Fullsize Bronco. com

Re: 9\" Rear ?\'s

The one from the 83 with 3.50 gears. Other than today(rain), I've worked on it everyday after school. The outside is cleaned up pretty well. I've already started stripping it down too. I am buying a 33" Xterrain($20) from a guy on Southern Jeeps and then I'll have it mounted on the wheel I'm buying from you. Then I need to find another tire/wheel for the other side to make this thing easier to move around! Hopefully I can have Cheesewerks(built my sliders) move the shock mounts and spring perches sometime in the next month or so. Still looking for a cheap d44.

Re: 9\" Rear ?\'s

You arent gunna use that X-Terrain as a spare are you? It's directional, so you get a flat on the opposite side and you are screwed. IMO,rolling the axle around the yard is all those tires are good for.
