83 Bronco Starter is hung

Hi everyone. When I try to start my bronco, as soon as I turn the key the starter engages before I turn the key all the way over. I have beat on the starter, and replaced the soleniod switch. Does anyone have any suggestions?? It just started doing this. Thanks

Re: 83 Bronco Starter is hung

My nabor had a problem like this with his car but when he turned the key of the starter kept on turning and would not shut off. we had to disconect the batery to make it stop. but that was the silinoid it got hung up and he replaced the starter and that was that. Does the starter turn the motor over or does it just spin?

The starter does turn the motor over. The only way you can make it stop is turn the key off. As soon as you turn the key on to the on position it cranks, before you have the chance to turn the key completely over.

If it was the solenoid it would still keep turning after the engine started. Replace the starter and see what happens

Re: 83 Bronco Starter is hung

I had the opposite problem with my 90 bronco, the key when turned all the way forward would not engage the starter. I tore into the steering column and found a broken piece. I will try and explain this now as best I can...So when you turn the key, a gear meshes with a long shaft that slides forward as you turn the key. This long shaft has 3 positions, the first is to unlock the shifter, the second to turn on the ignition, and the 3rd to activate the starter. Well mine broke so it was not pushing forward enough to engage the starter. The replacement shaft from ford was like 9 bucks, and I bought a new ignition, and key set from kragens for like 15 bucks, so it was a cheap repair, and not that complicated. But then your problem may be completly different, just thought I would give you more ideas. Good luck

Re: 83 Bronco Starter is hung

It sounds like your wiring is screwed up. From what you are saying the starter is engaging where the ignition spot is. It might be like Bronco boy says too. If it's starting ok and you want to do this cheap then I'd disconect the starter wire from the relay and wire up a push button starter button. You still need your key to start it up (turn the ignition on, then push the button) This IMO would be easier than tearing the column apart and trying to figure it out. A push button switch and some wire I imagine would be cheaper than $10.
