Need engine for 1988 Bronco

The engine in my 1988 Ford Bronco died (had it for 3 months). A mechanic in town (I live in the sticks) told me he could get a used engine for 950 or a rebuilt one for 2500 (which is what I paid for the truck)plus a full day of labor. I would like to try to find a better price if possible. Do I need to replace the engine with the same one that died? If not, what should I look for.
Plus - I can take the top off? Awesome. Karen

Re: Need engine for 1988 Bronco

What's wrong with the motor? What kind of mechanical bacground do you have? If he's saying he can rebuild it then it can't be that bad. A short block (just the block with no heads (reusing the top portion)) would be cheaper than the whole long block (block assy and heads) Your gambling when using a wrecking yard motor. There's nothing saying it will be any better than what you've got but like gambling you could win too.

It seized. The mechanic said that taking it apart to find out why wasn't worth it. He is talking about buying a used motor for 900 then charging an additional full days labor to install it. I have no mechanical background whatsoever.

Re: Need engine for 1988 Bronco

what motor DO you have, a 4.9, 5.0 or a 5.8?

Regardless, $900 is WAY TOO much unless its documented and guaranteed of some form, for used motor.

you can get a reman long block from auto stores nowadays with warranty, for much less than $2500 bucks, heck summitracing sells a brand new 5.0HO longblock with GT40 aluminum heads for $3200.

Have it towed back home and price around, sounds like your fixin to get [email protected]!

Thats what I thought too-
The motor that's in it is 4.90.
I don't need it in a hurry. It's been sitting in my driveway since September. Everything else is in great condition with new brakes and wheels.

A 490? Is that a typo?

Either way, that sounds like way too much. Consider selling the truck if everything else is in good condition. Take that money plus what you save from a new engine and get another un'

4.9l = 300 6. Alot of engine exchange places can get you going for much less than that with a warranty. If its EFI its deffnately worth keeping and getting rebuilt or going to rebuilt shortblock (around 700$)

I have a 4.9 out of a two wheel drive 1991 p/u. It runs but may need a rebuild. I remember it had alot of oil leaks. Can't remember how many miles on it. Heck I'd give it to you for nothing. Though I don't know if you'd want to come all this way for it.
