Bronc has the shakes
Hi Guys,

My '96 302 Bronco has gotten the shakes lately. It seems to drive normal (considering its 299k miles) but when I stop at a light and it idles, it shakes like a big old diesel truck. The engine doesn't make any undue noises, just shaking like a wet dog. I don't even know where to start looking and I'm hoping some Bronco expert out there can give me a hint or two.

The easiest thing to do is check if all your spark plug wires are connected. You could be missing if which would be a lot more noticeable at idle. If that's not the case you might have some broken motor mounts.

Re: Bronc has the shakes
I forgot to mention that it doesn't shake in the morning when the engine is cold. Only when I drive it a couple of miles and stop at a light, I notice the shaking. That seems to eliminate both your possible reasons, right?

Re: Bronc has the shakes
after the truck warms up is it sometimes hard to start back up? If so check your timing. Is it a stock motor? I had a problem when I put my motor in my truck a stock 302 is internaly balanced but the 5.0 HO is externaly balanced and I put the stock fly wheel on the HO motor and it would only shake at certin RPM's. So I had to put the HO fly wheel back on the motor.

Re: Bronc has the shakes
Have you checked your tranny fluid? I'm thinking maybe a torque converter problem? They'll shake if they're low on fluid.

"1985 Cherokee "

Hey norm good luck with the cherokee! With a 2.8l you will need all the luck you can get!!!! I've had enough problems with those engines to go on for days about them.. I'd be looking into a 4.0 swap!

Hijacker! Well what's done is done. It's my new daily driver. Believe it or not it runs pretty good. I plan on running the motor till the wheels fall off then maybe I'll throw a 302 in it. lol

Re: Bronc has the shakes
Yeah, it's a stock motor. It drives great, so it doesn't seem to be the timing. The tranny fluid is checked every month when I get an oil change. What else could it be?

Re: Bronc has the shakes
Is the idle low or is it idleing ok? Maybe motor mounts.

Re: Bronc has the shakes
The idle is okay, there's no difference between cold or hot idle. Wouldn't the motor mounts make excessive noise?

BTW, why are the Cherokee posts in my thread?
