front hubs

The son did a little off-roading Saturday night. Got out to unlock the hubs, with no problem. He went to the carwash to hose off the mud and discovered that one of the front hubs was missing. After further inspection he discovered the adjusting nut was cracked and metal shavings were present. This is a 1990 Bronco with factory manual hubs. We are replacing the hubs with Warn premium and any other parts that looked trashed after he digs into it. What is your learned opinion as to what could have caused this? He did have the gears redone about 4 months ago. I suspect they didn't reassemble that side correctly.

Re: front hubs

Was the locking mechanism completely missing or was just the plastic center piece missing? If it was just the center the answer is simple... ROCK. If the whole locking portion came off then all 6 of the hex bolts would have had to come off. If the entire locking hub mechanism came off then shame on the mechanic that did the job. There's two snap rings in there to hold the hub on. One on the axle itself and a snap ring that fits inside the protruding part on the disk. Warn makes the best available and often is one of the first upgrades people make. Good luck.
