Reading OBDII codes

My wife has a 98 Taurus is there a way to read the codes with out buying a reader or taking it to a garage. I know with my 90 EEC-IV I can use a paperclip, but not sure on newer vehicles? Second question, can I just unhook battery for 10 minutes to clear the codes (if I can read them)?

I forgot all about the ZONE. Went yesterday evening and found out I have Insufficient EGR flow, I took the valve off and cleaned it put it back together then disconnected battery for 15 minutes to see if the light would disappear, it did so far it still out!- Thanks for the reminder-BOB
