Shot axle pivot bushing

ever since I got my bronco august of 02 I've been wondering why the hell my right tire leaned and my steering would be fine one second, then really screwed up when I hit a pothole or bump, checked my balljoints, they were good, today I was gonna check my bearings, well when I took off the tire, I grabbed the hub and started pushing/pulling it all kinda ways and discovered that my axle pivot bushing it SHOT!, $8 for a new one from the zone, question is what will I need to do to replace it? remove my passenger side suspension, and disconnect the radius arm? or what? I figure it's gonna be a real pita, so I may as well change the drivers side too while I'm at it darn ttb... TTB

Re: Shot axle pivot bushing

I wouldn't put anything from the zone on my vehicle . My choice though. Try NAPA. Yes you'll have to disconnect a few things... -Bob

Re: Shot axle pivot bushing

You don't have to take sh*t apart. It's actually a very simple job. There are several posts here about it. Just put a jack under the axle, give a tiny bit of pressure, pull the pivot bolt, and let the jack down slowly. I like to put some jack stands loose under the frame just in case.

Hard part is getting the factory bushing out of the axle. Drill a bunch of holes in the rubber and sawzall/beat it out. Whatever it takes. Put the new one in with silicone grease.

Re: Shot axle pivot bushing

If you loosen the lower coil spring retaining nut you should be able to pull the beam clear of the brackets to change those bushings. I used a BFH and lots of swearing to replace mine but a balljoint press (borrow from autozone) would make it quite easy to get back in. Getting them out takes creativity and yes some swearing too

Re: Shot axle pivot bushing

That's why I said I did it the hard way! I was still learning this TTB - at this time so I decided since I went that far I should just put new springs [lift] on and the drop brackets... Bob
