89 F150 4x4 engine changeout

Was given an 89 F150 4x4 in fair condition. Has v6 300 EFI w/ cracked block. Plan to use on farm and want to changeout current engine with a carb'd 302 from an 87 mustang. Besides the electrical issues, which I'm aware, of are there any others that I'm missing which would not allow this to work? Will the current manual tranny bolt to the new engine which powered an automatic tranny etc...?

The bellhousing should be the same bolt pattern. The I6's got different motor mounts and motor mount mounts LOL, IOW the pieces that are riveted to the frame to retain the motor mounts are different. You'll probably want to get these off a donor truck

I'd keep the Strait 6 if I were you. It is a much better motor IMO than the 302 for our trucks. Way the costs of getting another 300 block and rebuilding it.

Re: 89 F150 4x4 engine changeout

you are correct....my bad.....it is a straight six. my point was to know if it was a matter of dropping in the new engine or if there were serious compatibility issues. I don't want to have to make this anymore of a project than I have to. Besides, I have a chance of a great deal ($300 +\- for the replacement engine in GOOD shape).

This is the same as the PM I sent you back:
In reply to:

The 6 is a truck motor with a truck cam and strait sixes generally have more torque and it's allready cam'd to the truck. The mustang motor will be built for a lighter vehicle which produces its power for higher rpms as it should for a mustang. I think you will be far more satisfied staying with the 6 and you will have far fewer headaches. If you have Fuel Injection on that 6 all the better. Look around and you will notice that carbs flat out suck off road especially in off camber type of situations. All of that and you don't have to change motor mounts, ect. Now if you were going to a 460 I'd say do it because there is pleanty more performance to be had there. I just don't think you will get the bang for the buck with the 302 swap, especially if its carb'd.

Re: 89 F150 4x4 engine changeout

i think your getting yourself into a real mess converting a 4.9 EFI to a 5.0 carbed engine and for your use it probably isnt worth the hassle:

whole new exhaust, intake system & filter housing, completely different fuel supply system, etc. Even though (for farm use & with a manual tranny) the mustang 5.0 should be fine as to the cam, (not desireable though) its gonna cost you more in the long run than replacing the bad 4.9 LB...... I don't think the V-6 was offered in the Bronco ever, but i could be wrong. I just looked in my Haynes and there is a V-6 teardown, but I never heard of one yet.

nope, no v6's in full-size trucks till the 4.2L in 97... now that GM has an inline 6 in their trucks again, I have to wonder if FORD will bring back the straight 6 as well?
