NP 208 to 205 swap help

I blew high gear out of Np 208 this morning. Should I have it rebuilt or find a 205? If swapping in a 205 what mods would be required?

Re: NP 208 to 205 swap help

If this is your 93 you're talking about, it's a BW 1356, not NP 208. If that's the case (heh, no pun intended) then I would find a junkyard replacement 1356 for several reasons:
<ul type="square">[*]np205 only has a 2:1 low gear vs the 2.69 of the 1356[*]to change cases, you'd have to change your driveshaft lengths and yokes, which gets costly[*]the 205 is cast iron and will be hanging off the back of the aluminum E4OD case with no support = cracked housing[*]the 1356 is a strong case, usually failures are related to lack of oiling due to inferior pump design[*]you will run into problems with the shift linkage since the 205 wasn't offered in this era of truck[*]and finally... because Steve83 here has an extra case that he'd probably let go pretty cheap vs what you'd pay to rebuild your current one
If you do decide to go the route of the 205, at least pursue the 205/203 doubler and make it worth your time

Please refer to my profile. BW 1356 and E4OD were swapped out for C6 and NP 208.

Re: NP 208 to 205 swap help

I would rebuild your 208. Not only is the 205 3" longer, but it has a low rango of 1.98 :1 as opposed to the 208's 2.61:1.
Plus, like muddy said, it is an aluminum housing as opposed to the cast housing of the 205 making it weigh about 60lbs less than the 205.

Id keep the 208.

Re: NP 208 to 205 swap help

Boy that's sad, I even read your profile first and still didn't see it

From what I hear, the 208 isn't as great as the 1356 so a 205 swap might make more sense there... it would be cheaper up front to stick with the 208 but if you break it again then it starts getting $$. You can find a 205 housing for the C6 so linkage should bolt up if you find what you need (this stuff is old and picked over!). I still think I'd look for a junkyard 208 before I spent the $$ to have it rebuilt... I doubt that will be cheap

Re: NP 208 to 205 swap help

Thanks. I got one lined up locally for $250 if needed. The Bronco is at the tranny hospital as we speak. Hope it's good news.
