Turn the key-accessories come on but no start?

My bronco has done this twice in the last week. The first time it cranked after turning the key back and forth a couple of times. Today I had to crank it under the hood with a screwdriver. When I got home it cranked fine with the key and also a couple more times after doin errands. Is there something easy I can check before going into the steering column. I hope it's not the actuator do ma hichy because it's kind a bitch to replace correct? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: Turn the key-accessories come on but no start?

The more I read the more I'm guessing it is the actuator rod. Mine has only done this twice in the last week or so. Can it (or something) be adjusted to fix the problem?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Turn the key-accessories come on but no start?

My starting problem was caused by corrosion on the wiring at the starter. I figured this out one battery, one starter, and several hours playing with the solenoid later. Dont do the same, check those wires carfully for any discoloration.

Are you talking about the one that I cranked the truck with (under the hood)? I'm TERRIBLE at electric stuff. And as far as testing, what do I do to test it?

Thanks,
Brian

Re: Turn the key-accessories come on but no start?

If it would'nt crank when you turned the key but did when you jumped across the solenoid with the screw driver then I would suspect the solenoid is bad.Next time it does it check the small wire(from ignition) at the solenoid for voltage(key in start position). If it has 12 volts then your ignition switch and rod in the column are working.Next check the starter side of the terminal(key in start position again)If it has twelve volts check the wiring at the starter. If it doesn't change the solenoid.

Re: Turn the key-accessories come on but no start?

the bad thing is you have two starter relays. The one on the fender well and another on the starter. With the key off check the starter for 12v on the big cable. It should be there. then take off the little wire on the starter and have soemone turn the key to the start position. Check for 12v on it. It should be there. if it is the your starter is bad. if it is not then check the fender mounted relay. One side is tied to the batt. One side goes to the little wire you just tested the other basically come from you key. turn the key to start and test the Key wire for 12v. If it has it the replace the fender realy ($12). If not your suckin', its is between the key and the relay.....

Yep! My Bronco is doing the same thing, probably once out of every 5-6 starts... I just push up on the key while in the start position and volia! It starts immediately, usually. It has only not worked this way once and of course I had to jump the solenoid. However if anyone can figure this out I would love to know...
