having problems puting my Dana 44 back together

first off, this is on a 74 ford f-100 with a 76 axle. I had my front axle all apart to put in new seals and ball joints and so far I have the differential in and the knuckles on. Then I put the little dist seal on the axle and slide it through the knuckle and into the housing and all that goes good. I then put on the brake caliper mounting plate, dust sheild,(The outside of the dust sheild is rusted away but I use what is left as a spacer to keep the proper spacing) Then I put on the spindle with the little plastic bush and the little seal BUT, When I tighten it down It pushes on the axle shaft so much that you cannot spin it, its like I am missing something. When I take the dust sheild off of the axle shaft and put everything togather it moves but sometimes it will rub against the axle housing. I am very frustrated and explanined it to the best of my ability. please let me know if you need something explained better or what. Thanx guys, I wish that I had a digital camera to help me explain this to you.

what dust shield on the shaft? only thing i can think of is maybe you have the wrong seal on the shaft and it's not seating right, causing it to get sandwiched between the spindle and the ujoint part of the shaft. It's really hard to say without a picture

When you pulled it all apart, did you mark where the axleshaft enters the housing, and is there a "rub ring" around the shaft anyway? Can it be that the shaft is not going in all the way, so when you put the spindle on and seat it against the outer shaft/seal, you are too far out?
