My rear drums on the 74 are driving me crazy--Help

I have a 74 EB and I started on the rear brakes about 1.5 weeks ago and it has been nothing but problems. I changed everything in the brakes--springs, self adjusters, wheels cylinders, drums and shoes. I bled the system with a pump-up system. I go and hit the brakes and the right rear cylinder comes apart--like it extended too far or something. Of course brake fluid shot out everywhere and ruined the shoes. I went to NAPA and got some good wheel cylinders and shoes. I was thinking the cheapo parts house cylinders were the problem. Well I install the Napa stuff today and drive it around the block and the same thing happens except it's on the left rear--yep the cylinder extended too far. Before I bled the system I made triple sure everything was like it is supposed to be and it still messed up. BTW, I have the big bearing 9" with the big brakes. I do not have the emergency brake hooked up on either side could that have anything to do with it?? Does anyone have any suggestions? I really hate to take it somewhere and pay 200 bucks for new rear brakes but I'm at my limits on what to do next.

Thanks,
Brian

are you sure you got the right diameter drums? if they're too big, well, you know what will happen

Re: My rear drums on the 74 are driving me crazy--Help

I'm putting discs on the front. I put this same post on classicbroncos.com and a guy said something about 4 slotted pins that fit into the wheel cylinders (2 per cylinder.) Sure enough I went out there and looked at my old cylinderss and these little pins were still in them. I had no idea I had to put the ones from the old cylinders into the new ones. I'm such a idiot---Live and learn I guess. I've been dealing with this problem going on 2 weeks now.

Front discs are just around the corner. Warn shafts and ctms are coming in August

doh! so when is it going to be ready to bring over here to Cass? I just watched the Extreme 4x4 show on Travel Channel and I'm pumped, I've gotta get up there and see the sights... I didnt figure there was much mud at the base of the Ozarks but it was sucking down 44's so I guess there is!
(yes, of course there are plenty of rocks too )

Re: My rear drums on the 74 are driving me crazy--Help

Cass---probably not anytime soon. To tell you the truth I'm not sure if this thing will be ready until this time next year. I still have to--1)front disc brakes 2)power disc brakes 3)4.88 gears w/electrac up front and a detroit in the rear 4)power steering 5)front & rear warn axles and ctms 6)5.5" lift and 2"body 5)37"-38"tsls or boggers 7)beadlocks 7)new engine---mine is so tired. That is probably the order I will be going in.

Too much work and not enough time.

Later,
Brian
