newbie: 4x4 front tires not pulling?

Hi guys. I bought a '95 eddie bauer close to a year ago. When purchased i put the truck into 4x4 mode and the light came on indicating 4x4 was engaged. I also put it into 4 low and heard a slight clunk. Long story but the short of it is my nephew got lost walking in the woods (we live in the woods) and i went to find him. While riding down old logging roads and hunting trails, I found him but decided my front tires were not pulling. Although the truck went up and down ditches, I want 4x4. Should I hear any type of noise when the truck is put in 4 high? Like previously stated the light comes on when i push the 4x4 button, but i hear nothing until i hit the 4 low button. I would be appreciative to anyone with a trouble-shooting plan.

Thanks,
old_truck

first off i take it you have automatic hubs to match that electric 4x4, so find something slipper and see if all four wheels spin in 4h, you wont neccesarily hear anything when shifting into it due to the shift on the fly synchronises the front driveshaft and thus nothing is engaging froma standstill like the 4 low does. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah. First off replace the front hubs to some manuals. In my opinion you can not go wrong with purchasing some Warn Premiums. Here's a post I found using the search function: Switching to Manual hubs I hope this helps. I'm going to help a friend swap to manual hubs in his Exploder this next friday. Don't waste your money on auto hubs again. My dad is a Service manager at a reputable dealer and he had recently told me that all auto hubs are crap. They are intended for granny to get her groceries home in the snow. That and they are EXPENSIVE to replace. Take Care. NORM

Re: newbie: 4x4 front tires not pulling?

Thanks guys!

McDerry, I am pretty sure my front wheels are not pulling. I was trying to make it up a washed out road and my back tire started to spin and neither front wheel turned over BTW: should both back wheels have spun?

BigNorm, thank you for the links to the auto to manual hub conversion. I would love to put the manual hubs on but i'd like to verify the hubs are the problem before spending the money (money is tight). Should i jack up the truck and engage 4x4 and see if the front driveshaft turns? Guess i'd have to have the truck really secure for this procedure. If the front driveshaft turns, guess i should order the warn prem manuals and it looks like i'll need a conversion kit to go from auto to manual hubs. I'd like good price/service, any ideas on where to order my hubs and conversion from?

Thanks for the help guys and sorry if these are elementry questions but everyone has to start sometime. It took me needing my 4x4 for a family emergency to get me started but i think i may be hooked b'cuz it sure was fun after i found him sliding through the mud taking him home

If you have a limited-slip rear, and the clutches arent shot yet (they will be sooner or later), then Yes, to a degree.
If you have a 'open dif rear', then No, only the wheel with the least resistance would spin.

okay jack up the front and turn the drive shaft and see if the front tires move, if they do its not the hubs if they dont its the hubs. Easiest way Ive found to do it. Of course i ahvent gone to manuals cause the autos still work and im cheap.

Should the truck be running and 4x4 engaged to lock the auto hubs in before i turn the front driveshaft for this test? If so should the truck be in neutral?

Any one have any thoughts on were to get a quality conversion kit to go from auto to manual hubs? Is there a particualr brand of conversion kit i should look for?

for McDerry's test, just leave the truck off and in 2wd. in fact, you dont really need to even jack up the tires. just try to turn the front driveshaft as your truck sits in the driveway right now. if it turns more than a little, the hubs arent engaging. if it turns a little then stops, they are, at least temporarily, working.
