gas mileage go down the hole

Alright, for the past 3-4 fill-ups (or roughly 2 weeks), I've been getting a considerably lower gas mileage. I've been doing a steady 14.5 mpg (consistant for a good 8-12months) and as of late it suddenly dropped to a hair over 12mpg. I even threw in some injector cleaner and it didn't help one bit. Now, there's only a couple of things I can think of...
1) I haven't washed my truck since thanksgiving and the weight is causing a problem
2) last oil change I put in dino-oil instead of synthetic (I've heard that can mess things up a little)
3) my K&N is dirty (but I cleaned it the day before yesterday and it didn't help any)

You guys got any other suggestions for the sudden drop in mileage?

Thanks in advance!

How is the vehicle running? Idling OK, etc?

Re: gas mileage go down the hole

every once in awhile (read 3-4 months) I get a rough idle for about 2-3 seconds. Other than that, it seems to be doing alright.

Have you pulled the plugs to see the condition. What about cleaning the IAC?

Re: gas mileage go down the hole

I've also dropped alot was getting 10-12 now more like 6-8 for the past two months. I have a sh!tty idle it will sometimes idle in park at 1200 or so and drive at a light 900. I've checked the timing, plugs cap, wires, coil cleaned the IAC and throttle body, but no help. I've had several friends with F-150's tell me they have had the same symtoms and can't figure it out. There trucks are stock, I have no emmission hooked up to mine. I think it's the Gas mixture around here. But my idle has me stumped.

Do they use oxygenated fuel where you live? I always see a drop in my fuel mileage when Denver switches over to oxygenated fuel during the winter months.

Re: gas mileage go down the hole

IIRC, oxygenated fuel is fuel that has had Ethanol or MTBE added to it, which increases the oxygen content of the fuel. This is done to reduce vehicle emissions (usually in heavily populated areas or areas that have pollution problems). The gas stations out here always put some type of sticker on the pumps indicating that the fuel is oxygenated or that it contains Ethanol.

Re: gas mileage go down the hole

I was wonderin' about my idle speed, my motor is very loud and at a high rpm when I start it, it's about 2,000 then will drop to 1,100 and will stay there? I've heard that it's not adjustible. I drove a friends '89 bronco 302/aod eddie bauer-my twin!, and his when you start it, is at 600rpm and will stay there, motor is really quiet, he must get wonderful gas mileage! but why is that?!600!!!RPM's!!!WTF!!!But mines faster!
