Gas Milage Possibilities...

Ok..this is probably a dumb question but is it possible to get around 15mpg highway with a stock 460?

I just picked up a cheap 86 F250 4x4 with a 460 / C6 auto right now im gettin about 10mpg and would like to see it get better. i do know for one thing that the carb is way out of tune and needs rebuilt. i am going to put on a 600cfm 1406 edelbrock here in the next few weeks but i was wondering if anything else might help it along...such as different cam or intake...

im open to any logical ideas....

Re: Gas Milage Possibilities...

Does it need a tune-up? Try going with better coil/ignition/wires. Change the fuel filter, and um....maybe a better exhaust? K&N air filter? Im sure you could get a couple mpg outta all that

Re: Gas Milage Possibilities...

Honestly, IMO that is good mileage. Is the vehicle stock? Tires, gearing etc. will make it worse for sure. I rode with a Bronco equipped with a 460 and well tuned up the highway to Broncofest last year. this truck is highly modified, but at total highway, cruising at 59 MPH, he averaged maybe 8mpg. I got around 15mpg, with 351.

If you are stock and get 10, you are doing OK, you might be able to get 11-12 if kept stock and in great tune.

Fuel Inject it! That in itself will save you some go go juice.

Re: Gas Milage Possibilities...

this is a stock truck. the tires are actually a bit smaller then stock...got 255/70's vs. 235/85's

id does need a tune up. right now im getting 9.5 mpg highway

I dont want to swap to efi at the moment. maybe in the future but right now im going to try getting the edelbrock i have to do a bit beter then this holley.

i have seen that project mpg. personally i feel the guy that owns it is a goof. ive had dealings with him in the past.

i dont doubt his numbers or his methods i just feel you have to be able to do better then that...

Re: Gas Milage Possibilities...

Well, on any given day....it is always possible that conditions allow you to get great mileage, but over a period of time, I think averaging around 10-11 is decent.

Fuel Injection of course can help, but you will always be stuck with a big block wanting to be fed.

big blocks are hungry beasts. the day a big block gets better mileage than my 351 is the day I look to build one.

Re: Gas Milage Possibilities...

On the highway those small tires will kill your gas. Takes less to get them rolling but more to keep them rolling. You will do better in town but big tires do better on the highway...

how fast are you going? with no OD, if you're over 55, you're sucking it down with the best of them. if you have 4.1's in the rear, that's even worse (do you?). taller tires would do wonders, since the 460/C6 can manage 33" tall tires fine with even 3.55's... I'd step it up to 35's if you have 4.10 gears. 10mpg out of a carbed big block really is decent though. you could always try the cheap tricks like insulating the air intake, setting up a cold ram air, MSD coil and wider gaps, etc
