Tie rod ends too small

Installing '79 3/4 T Dana 44 tube front end under '80 3/4 T pickup.
The spindle hole is too large. Even tried F350 ends. I desire to use
the F350 tierod assembly.

Is a spacer available? What do others do to get around this?
Is there a manufacturer who makes specialty 'lash ups' in a case
like this?

Thank you.

Re: Tie rod ends too small

Maybe you can get some bigger tie rod ends? I'm sure someplace must make them. You came to the right place though. Someone here will have the info? BTW: Whutcha doin' with the old TTB axles? NORM

Re: Tie rod ends too small

if the stock 79 f250 ends wont fit your current tie-rod, you could try a more expensive but stronger PU Rock Proof steering system at $189

with this kit you can drill your knuckles for over-knuckle steering too, which keeps the rod away from those pesky rocks

Re: Tie rod ends too small

Wouldn't a reamer be better for attatching them from the top? I'd be afraid of ruining the tolerances with a drill.

Re: Tie rod ends too small

when Four Wheeler installed the kit, they simply drilled the knuckles for the 3/4" bolt, which I guess is ok since they say the bolt is rated for 540ft-lb torque! I wouldnt think it would move around much with that much clamping force, but it would be nice you could drill it a little smaller then heat the knuckle to get the bolt in, but it must not be an issue. Very cool looking stuff, and of course it's mainly meant for off-road-only vehicles anyway. (dunno if it's even legal for road use, probably not )

Re: Tie rod ends too small

If the kit uses the heim joints as rod ends, then no its not street legal. Don't know why. It's stronger and more durable...

Re: Tie rod ends too small

beacuse heims wear badly when they get dirt/sand it beacuse they are open, and have no sheilding to preotect them, and we cant push tthe dirt out with a grease gun like we would on our tierods, and then the steering will have play in it, and be a littl emore scary at high speeds.

Re: Tie rod ends too small

I know someone who reamed out the knuckle from the top in order to get some the steering up and out of the way some. I'll try to find out what size reamer he used. BTW He did it on a D44 strait axle with stock type tie rods. Get back to ya'll on this soon I hope.

Re: Tie rod ends too small

Zach, according to PU, that is not an issue with their rod ends. i find it hard to believe, if you read all the stuff on their page about the rods and how they're tested, it makes them seem pretty badass

Re: Tie rod ends too small

I can't believe that PU charges people money for a big bolt and some grount down nuts. Whats worse is people pay for that too. I mean you can make the special nuts too, just take grade 8 nut thread on to 1 inch long screw and pop it in the lathe and turn till its rounded on a end. Theres like 5 dollars in bolts in the whole kit.

Must be only person that cant spell too right the first time.
