3 gears and a torque converter suck

I have a 1980 Bronco with a 400M that was balanced, blueprinted, and put together with all the works. I am pretty sure it is pushing near 300 hp and 400 ft lbs of torque as it runs low 16 second 1/4 miles at 86 mph with a factory 3.00 to 1 rear diff and a C6 auto. I want to get better 60 ft times than my current 2.7 second best thus forcing me to get lower gears in the rear, however my fuel economy already sucks. Is there an overdrive trans, manual or auto that can handle the power of my engine and bolt to the big block (351M, 400M, 429, 460) bell housing? I know the E4OD might but it is computer controlled and I prefer manual transmissions anyways. Any help is greatly appreciated, I really want to smoke a camaro with a Bronco, that would just be cool.

Re: 3 gears and a torque converter suck

If you're tossing a ton of cash into your rig, try going with a set of lower first and second gears for the C-6. Better launches, and lower RPM's at cruising speed. If you want to get an overdrive, but don't want to hassle with converter lockup, swap in an AOD, with the low 1st & 2nd gears. No worry about converting the electronics, plus a 30% overdrive at speed. The AOD can be made into a pretty hearty trans. if you set it up right.

AOD with a big block bell housing bolt patter?

Thanks for response, I knew about the wide ratio gear set for the C-6, but I really want an overdrive. This is not a 1/4 mile machine, it is a Z-71 smoker. Is there an AOD that fits the 400M bell housing bolt pattern? If I am not mistaken this is the same pattern as the 385 series big blocks (429-460). If so I had no idea ford made them.

Re: AOD with a big block bell housing bolt patter?

Have you tried the guys at L&L Products? They do all kinds of conversion stuff for Ford vehicles. They may have an adapter for the bolt patterns, or have a suggestion/source for what you are looking for.
