Bent Front Bumper

Hey Guys,
I rear ended an explorer the other day and put an small dent in my front bumper. If i try pounding out the dent will the chrome come off? A buddy told me to leave the dent in or the chrome coating will flake off and the buper will rust. Any one got an idea? By the way the explorer got crunched and just my luck a cop was driving it. Cool though, says I owe him a beer for the trouble.

Re: Bent Front Bumper

The chrome plating on the bumpers is fairly robust, but there is always the possibility of it flaking off from the deformation. If you decide to try to pound it out, try heating the back of the bumper to relieve the stress in the metal, and the coating, it may help prevent the chrome from delaminating. This is just a guess on my part. A new front bumper from Ford will go for around $275, so it's your call...
