bad gas mileage

When I first got my 93, I usually got 13-14 mpg, but now I'm doing good to get 11. I think it may have to do with the emissions system because occasionally the check engine light will come on for 5-10 seconds, but I"m not sure. I bought a new PCV valve, but it looks like it goes in right by the firewall in some kind of impossible to get to location. Anybody done this before?

Re: bad gas mileage

You should check your engine computer codes, after it goes through the current codes it will cycle through the past codes, which would indicate what the problem was when the light flashed from those 5-10 seconds. I've used and Equus Ford code reader on my computer which performs a number of additional tests, I'm not sure if these are available by simply jumping the terminals as laid out in the manual. However, sometimes one problem will cause a number of additional codes to come up. A plugged fuel filter had me chasing my tail for days.
Good luck PJL

Re: bad gas mileage

Also, you should give it a basic tune up. Change the rotor, cap, wires, plugs, fuel filter, and air filter. You can also sidegap the sparkplugs for a power and MPG increase. See:
