dim dash lights on \'86

I recently bought a very clean '86 that has dim dash lights. All the bulbs are working, but they just don't brighten the dash instrumentation enough. Anyone have this problem before? How did you fix it?

Re: dim dash lights on \'86

A bad headlight switch is the most likely culprit, though it is possible that there is a short somewhere. But the Ford headlight sw. goes bad all the time I would change that first before I spent a lot of time chasing other possiblities. I don't mean to sound rude, but you do know that the headlight sw. knob turns to adjust the instr. lights. Just checking.

One or two out bulbs will make the dash look dim. If it is not the switch. Ken

the dimness of my dash lights are adjustable (90) You just turn the knob that turns on the headlights. I know its simple...but worth a try

Re: dim dash lights on \'86

My 86 has dim dash lites too. The headlight knob will adjust them, but at the brightest setting they're still not too good. I've had other older cars where the little bulbs aged and the glass got kinda black. Replacing the bulbs brightened up the cluster. Problem with the 86 Bronco, the under dash area is pretty inaccessible and you'd probably have to pull the cluster to replace bulbs. I've decided that if it ain't really broke, I'm not gonna fix it.

Steve, did you have to pull the instrument cluster or did you get at the bulbs from underneath?

Norm,

Pulled the cluster... actually pretty easy... disconnecting the speedo cable wasn't too bad... used to doing it in my 1970 F-100 2wd...haha
