E4od Transmission

I wanted to know how much transmission fluid i can expect to come out of the torque conveter. Also, how should I drain the torque converter. There is a rubber plug under the converter, but have never seen whats under it.

Re: E4od Transmission

Expect roughly 7 quarts out of the converter. Pull the inspection plug, then rotate the converter until the drain plug is facing down. You'll know it when you see it, think it takes an 11mm socket but can't remember for sure.

Re: E4od Transmission

FYI - If you drain the converter, later, when you are putting ATF back in and have quite a few quarts in, stop and run it just for a moment so the trans pump can pressurize and refill what were air spaces with fluid. I didn't do this on an AOD trans once, and as I refilled, and got within quarts of full, it started coming out of the vent on the top of the trans case. 'Course, I didn't see this till a red wave moved across the floor! What a mess! Hydro fluid is almost impossible to wipe dry! So now I always run them for a moment.
If you don't drain the converter, then that's not a problem. But Ford has been nice enough to leave a converter drain plug, so I always use it.
