rear main brg seal replacee

I have a 78 bronco with a 400m that needs its rear main bearing seal
replaced. I heard you can put a new 2 piece seal in with out removing
the engine. Has anyone done that?

Re: rear main brg seal replacee

Although I have never done this myself (yet! Hope it stays that way!), I have seen procedures for replacing the 2 piece seal with a new 2 piece seal. The engine stays put, except for jacking it up to get the Oil pan (w/oil pump) off to get at the crank. All bearing caps loosened to drop the crank no more than 1/32 inch, unbolt rear cap completely, pull lower seal out, drive a sheet metal screw into one end of upper, pull out without scratching the crank. Procedure for putting the new upper seal in, and where not to get oily, and where to put two beads of sealer is pretty specific, so I would recommend getting the text to see first-hand.

It seems somebody on this, or the F-Series board did this many months ago. If they're around, maybe they could comment about any problems they had - Thanks.
