Front drive system drag

Another newbie question (since I've never owned a 4WD before).

When I lock the front hubs (transfer case in 2WD mode) there is a fairly noticable lack of power (drag). If I lock just one hub it pulls (pretty bad) to one side. Is this normal? (seems like a lot)

I know that turning the axles/differential would put some drag on the system, but should it be this noticable?

I also hear a slight whine from the front when the hubs are engaged (normal?)

Thanks!

Re: Front drive system drag

Any noise from the front while engauged is not normal! If you noticed loss of power and a pull while only one hub locked, I'd be sure to bet the is a bearing problem in the diff. You mentioned in this or another post that you had the front ball joints replaced??, Did you pack the spindle needle bearings? Have you checked your front diff FLUID??? how about front pinion slop? Any? These things will tell you alot. If the Vehicle pulls w/one hub locked I say you definatly have a diff problem.
