I6 Pinging - Duraspark Conv.

I converted my 85 I6 EECIV to a duraspark with MDS blaster coil.
I also put on a non electronic carb from an E350.
Runs 100 percent better. BUT: It pings a lot on 93 octain
I set the timming 10 BTDC with the vacumn line off. Is that right ?
I installed new Autolite 45s. Are they OK ?
If so what else could it be?

Re: I6 Pinging - Duraspark Conv.

When My engine (I6) was stock with the Duraspark set-up I had no trouble running my Timing a 14-16* BTDC at 700Rpm with vacumm disconnected to set timing. the sticker under the hood says 6-8* at 700rpm on mine. Mine started to ping on 92 octane at 20* BTDC when it was stock. make sure you have the Two vacumm lines that go to the distributor hooked up properly, there should be a red(goes to vacumm t) and a yellow(timed vacumm port on carb) also with that coil gap the plugs an extra .005 to .010......

Do'n it with only 6 cylinders!

Thanks for the Iinfo ! I put in an 83 distributor that only has one vacumm line. I connected it to the tube on the throdal plate.
I wonder if the autolite 45s are too hot?

Re: I6 Pinging - Duraspark Conv.

mine is an 83 also but From the factory it have the red and yellow vacumm line the t into one just before the distributor.the red line has some kinda dohicky on it(looks like a very small filter whicn goes to manifold vacumm-t and the yellow goes directly to the carb timed port. this is before I went to a 4bbl and offy intake... I'm also running Autolite 45 plugs and they work good for me, but I think I like AC/delco plugs best.

Do'n it with only 6 cylinders!

Re: I6 Pinging - Duraspark Conv.

Tell me more about the two vacumm hoses. One from the carb and one from the manifold, then they come together in a T
before the distributer? And I wonder what the gadget was?

I remember seeing an explanation of the types of vacumm but I didn't save it .
I think I will repost this out under 83 vacumm diagram needed.
