Shifting Into 4X4 ???

Ok I just bought a '90 Dodge Pickup 4X4,Automatic Transmission. My question,I'm use to stopping throwing my stuff into 4X4.But what I see on this is I have to have it moving to put it into 4H or back to 2H,or stop to put it into 4L.How does this work if you see your coming to an area that you may need 4X4 go ahead a shift. If you get stuck go to 4L????

Re: Shifting Into 4X4 ???

You don't have to be moving to shift between 2 high and 4 high, they are just pointing out that you can shift without stopping. For 4 low, you'll still have to stop to go from 4 high to 4 low. As for high or low range, it just takes experience to know which you need. Generally, high range works better for mud and low for rough terrain.
