12 valve or 24 valve

Hi everyone.

Need some expert advise. Im looking at getting me a 98 2500 diesel. its got the 24valve engine. I know a bit about the 12valve and I was curious what sort of milage the 24valve engine got and if there were any major maintenace issues with it. The 12valve engine seemed to be quite good on fuel and very good on maintenance.

Thanks everyone.....

Re: 12 valve or 24 valve

From what our customers say, 15-18 is about the average. As for maintenence, use a high quality fuel, it is the only lube for the injector pump, no more engine oil like the 12 valve. the transfer pumps are a bit of an issue, but no where near as bad as the new HPCR engines. Hopefully it's been converted to the new in-tank transfer pump. Oh and one other difference from the 12 valve, it's LOUD, way louder. But in a good way If I was in the market for a diesel, a 24 valve would be my choice.

Re: 12 valve or 24 valve

I went from a 96 12v to an 01 24v to an 03 24v.
There is no comparison. The 24v has way more power, lots of snap. you can drive with the traffic and dont have to plan your moves as much. I averaged 15-16 mpg with the 96, 19-20 with the 01 (Chipped), 18-19 with the 03. The handling improved a lot with each one too.
