Holley Carbs
I recently replaced my worn out 318 with a 360 and a Mopar Performance Cam.(Comperable to a stock 4bbl cam). I am presently using an Edelbrock performer carb. I am not totally pleased with this carb. I may put on an old Q-jet that I used on the 318. I have not had any Holley experience in several years and was wondering if these carbs would work well for me.

Holly's work great if you take the time to tune them correctly. Everything (jets, power valve, accelerator pump cams, float height, squirter size, etc.) needs to be set up for your motor and the style of driving you do. A good Holley guy could probably get it close on the bench but you have to drive it to get them set up right. I don't understand why the Edelbrock (Carter AFB) carb isn't working. What does it do? These are pretty fool proof carbs out of the box and don't require much tuning. Let me know, I've worked with them all!

On the back of the edelbrock carb (Where the weights for the secondary air plate are at) gas will collect in these areas. When this
happened I could smell raw gas in the cab of my RC. I recently had a Q-jet tuned for my RC. Other than the vacuum advance being
connected to manifold instead of ported vacuum it was running pretty good (even the choke worked). About a week after this the
battery and alternator went bad, and now after I've replaced these the engine still runs good but idles like crap. I've tried everything
(idle mixture screws, timing, idle speed, carb cleaner, new wires, cleaned plugs) but nothing seems to help. Any ideas???
My next test will
be to put the edelbrock carb back on and see how it runs.

The problem with the AFB sounds as simple as setting the float height. If it is too high raw fuel will come out of the float bowl vent(s) and will probably collect in this area. Check it out, the Edelbrock AFB sound like your best carb out of the bunch to use[img]/wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif[/img]. By "Q-Jet" you are talking about a Quadrajet and not a Thermoquad...right? Quadrajets are notorious for two little plugs on the bottom of the carb leaking gas.[img]/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif[/img] This will cause a way rich condition at idle, but might not be noticable under power. They are on the bottom of the carb body, centered. You may have to remove the baseplate to see them. If you remove the baseplate and a little bit of gas dumps out, this is (at least one of) your problem(s). If they are leaking, mix up a little bit of JB Weld (epoxy) and smear it over these plugs. Let it set for a day before putting it back together. Let us know how it works out![img]/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif[/img]

I want to thank you for your help. I took an afternoon off from work to tackle the Q-jet, and on my way home from work it started
working. I could not believe my luck. I had my carb mechanic take a look at it anyway. We both agreed that some dirt or crud
must have just had to get worked through. There was gas dripping off the primary venturies. I checked the float level on the
edelbrock just in case I decide to put it back on. The floats were about 1/32 to high. I reset both float levels anyway.
