Good 4-speed

What 4-speed would be a good choice to put behind a 340 cid, I plan on installing a 340 into my CJ-5 and I want to go with a 4-speed manual. Better yet a combination of 4-speed and t-case with passenger side front out-put. Can anyone tell me what year of Dodge truck I might be able to find this setup?

A MOPAR fan with a Jeep.

Thanks a lot for the info, it will help alot.

Ross, I think you are making the right call going with the 360 mag, you'll have better selection of parts and tech support. My 340 came from my 71 Plymouth Barracuda that I had a long time ago, I've had the engine sitting in the garage figured I'd put it to good use, it has the original 6-pack intake and carbs I don't know if I'll use them or go with a 4 barrel, I think that the 6-pack will not be to trail friendly.

Thanks again

Re: Good 4-speed

I would get a NP435 with the married NP205 as used in the 81 W250/350. Good low 1st gear (can't remember what the ratio is now though-6.69:1 comes to mind?) and the bulletproof gear drive transfer case. Don't know what you would end up with for rear driveshaft length though. A small block 4-spd bellhousing should be easy enough to come up with-is your 340 forged crank or cast crank? Reason I ask is that you could use the 318 flywheel with your forged crank (both are internal balance). Should be a sweet rig though. I am also a Mopar man with a Jeep-mine is an XJ but I will be getting a SWB soon hopefully-probably a CJ7

Hope this helps

Re: Good 4-speed

I sure hope you do a picture story as you go. Love to see that on one of the sites, and in a magazine. I was planning on getting my brother to install a Magnum 360 with the auto overdrive in a CJ7. Do you think the 340 is better. I just thought about the 360 Mag because everything is factory, efi and all. Except for motor mounts, the manager at a local Dodge dealer who is doing this, told me it is almost a drop in deal, and bolts right up to a Dana 300. Lemme know what you think. Ross
