Tranny cooler for 99 Ram auto OD?

Anyone put an aftermarket cooler into their 94 and up Ram with an auto OD tranny? I want to put one on mine, keep it nice and happy. $70 worth of cooler is better than $1500 worth of custom trans work. Hell, I'll buy a beefed up A518(?) later and put it in myself, but for now, keeping the stock one going would be good.

I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, but still refer to myself as "Captain Mechanically Non-Inclined" sometimes.

What has to be done? Anything truly involved?

What brand and model of cooler did you use?

How did you mount it? I'm not to cool on the zip tie to the radiator fin idea.

I want to change the fluid and filter, put in a pan drain plug, and do this all at the same time. Also, is it basically the best idea to run the Chrysler ATF in these?

The Dodges have enough problems without using non standard fluid. Stick with the Plus 3 or 4. Four can only be bought at the dealer because no one has reverse egineered it yet. I use the +3 from autozone by Castrol.

What's the difference between the 3 and 4 stuff?

Any idea how much the dealer charges for them?

4 is the latest formulation only available at the dealer. It's kinda like Dexron, through the years they've modified it so now you have Dexron II-III and the like. In the older trannys you can use a minimum of 3 and 4 if you choose. The newer trannys use only the 4. Make sense?

Re: Tranny cooler for 99 Ram auto OD?

I put in one from the local parts store, its the biggest one they had, I did use the zip tie installation for the ease. I just unbolted the radiator and just let it lean out enough so I could get my hand down in between it and the a/c...
