99 Ram 2500 trans questions

Question. I just bought a 99 Ram 2500 4x4 quad cab (44K miles) and it seems to shift hard into second gear. Is this a normal thing?

I also noticed that it slided in and out of gear when just a little gas is given when driving around in a parking lot (slow speeds kind of thing)

Ideas would be great
Do the bands need to be tightened?

Went driving today and it feels like the tourqe converter is locking up and releasing, locking up and releasing

Re: 99 Ram 2500 trans questions

Dodge's auto OD trannies in trucks are not known for their long life spans, similar to the GM 4L60E/4L60/TH700R4 family. I can't tell you much about fixing it, but definately get a cooler, and start saving for a high performance rebuild and upgrade.

So this is what you went for instead of the Tahoe? I'm getting a Ram 2500 4x4 with the Cummins and 5 speed next year, love that beef. 1 ton axles aren't bad either.

Re: 99 Ram 2500 trans questions

I couldnt pass up the deal and Im covered by the used warrentee (60 days) I also went for the extended. The trans is covered. I was just curious if the hard shifts into second were normal, and if I was right about the converter

The 2500s come with a cooler for the trans, as well as a better alt. I believe. Part of the factory towing package

Re: 99 Ram 2500 trans questions

Dodge upgraded the auto trans in 2000 with an different valve in the trans. Check with your local Chrysler dealer about it. Might be a recall on it.
