97 Dodge 4x4 shifting problem

I just bought a 97 Dodge 4x4 with a 318. I'm not sure what the tranny is. It has 68000 miles and yesterday on the highway it started shifting up and down several times real fast. You can see the RPM gauge going high the low. Has anyone else seen this problem? I would think it is electrical but don't know. Any help would be great. I don't have the cash to take it into the shop and it come with no warranty.

Re: 97 Dodge 4x4 shifting problem

My uncle leased a 97 or 98, and it was at the dealer for trans problems more than he drove it, but he also had a pinto hitch and towed one hell of a trailer. It might just be out of adjustment, I aint to familiar with dodge, but don't they runn off a kick down cable?, or vacuum?
