Think flex plate on 79 Ramcharger went south!

My brother-in-law used my 79 RAMcharger to plow snow here in mid-Michigan this last storm. He or I plow both of our drives as we live in the country but next to each other. Bolts from flex plate to convertor had been hitting on the inspection plate from time to time since last year. Straightened the tab on the inspection plate and it seemed to stop for awhile. While he called me from his house and said the vechile just stopped moving while plowing, wouldn't move in any gear, engine still running no unusual noise. He shut the engine off and then tired to restart it. Starter spun, but engine did not even try to turn over. Any ideas or confirmation of my fears. Is it possible to repair without pulling transfer case and trans? Debating on puting this beast out of it's miserary!!!!!

God Bless and thanks for any and all help.
Bill

Not sure what axles it has. As far as the engine goes it's a 318 with a Holley 4 barrel. Low or no oil pressure, that way for over a year. A few members on the board here said possibly bad cam bearings. No unusual noise in the engine and it still pulls or should I say pushes strong. Send me your E:Mail and let me know where you're located. If I do put it out of it's misery I'll want to do it as a total package, probably could work something out real reasonable as I don't have the time or desire to part it out and my wife dosen't like my non functional toys around. Sold an 60 something Missan 4x4 king cab a couple of years ago. Bad clutch salve cylinder and badly rusted body for $100.00, if that gives you any idea of my getting rid of the Dodge Ram.

Re: Think flex plate on 79 Ramcharger went south!

If the flex plate broke, I would think it would be making a HE11 of a racket with bits of sheetmetal hitting each other. Pull the inspection plate off the trans, and see of the torque convertor is turning when your brother hits the key. If not, the flex plate may have broke and the convertor slid back into the trans far enough to avoid noise. If the convertor does turn, but the motor does not a broken flex plate should make noise, but you might have busted the end off the crank. Higly unlikely, but possible.
