TTR 230 Questions

After a 35 year layoff from Dirt Bikes, I finally grew my pay check enough to go get one. Having been a 2-stroker in the old days.. I changed up and bought a 2008 TTR 230, and a TTR 125 for the girls. After a month of ridiing the 230, I have some questions about the engine noise. The 125 starts fine, runs great, and when you listen to it, it purrs smoothy. The 230 rattles, runs rough and the idle is hard to find, constantly needing to be adjusted even after a good hour or so. It backfires and coughs when you release the throttle and sometimes going thru the gears. It runs like a scalded dog..but its just so darn noisy. Is this to be expected? Does it ever settle down and run smoothly? If not I may need to take it to the Warranty Shop and get them to listen to it? It's not like anything is broken.. Its more like the valves need adjusting or something. I have lawn mowers that run smoother!
Anyone got any ideas..
