alternator/starter

anybody know anybody who makes or could make an alternator that is also a starter.

we are looking at doing this on our gixxer to save some wieght, gotta make room for the turbos

anybody who could pull this off would get quite a big sticker on our sled/trailer

Re: alternator/starter

you could try to seperate the two windings and magnetic fields, by doing this you could charge anytime the alt is spinning and only supply current to the starter when needed. if this is how it would be done i dont know, let me talk to my paps, he was an elec engineer back in the day, he might know. check out honda new wave runner, 165hp, turbo four cylinder, four stroke, 4 valve. is this a crotch motor, 1235 cc.

Re: alternator/starter

My friend has a old yamaha DT80(?) that has an alternator/starter on it, so it can be done!

Why not just use one of those electric starters that go-carts and dragsters use, you know, the ones that you hold to the motor??

Re: alternator/starter

nope, pulling over a 4 hole 4-stroke at -20c is quite proposterous.
plus it would take alot of machining, and we already have plenty of that needed to be done

Re: alternator/starter

Why not get an alternator/starter off the DT80 and make one for the sled?
