82 rm 125 questions

i posted a while back about my buddy getting a free 82 rm125 that was in a million peices and we were trying to rebuild it. well it looks great he took a die grinder to all of the frames, swing arms, sprockets, you name it he buffed and polished it. then painted it, ordered the book and some parts, and it is finally done except for the chain, clutch lever, and...........oh yeah, it won't start. it sounds like it wants to and gets good compression, we checked for spark and it is getting it too the spark plug, and it is very weak comming out of the plug. he said he lost intrest in it and sold it to me for what he had into it in parts. $100!!! i'm going to get a new plug and see if that is it, but if not what else do you guys think it could be?? and does anyone know what size chain it takes and where to buy a CHEAP one?
thanks for any help i know nothing about fixing them just how to ride'em and wreck'em.

$100 sounds about right
See what happens with the new plug....if I were you I'd get it started before you spend the money on a chain.... and then get a non- O-ring chain (its cheaper) and new steel sprockets.

i had a old bike spin the fly wheel key.. It still sparked great but barley ran becuase the timing was off. Pull the cover and make sure the flyweel isnt loose and isnt spun.

Re: 82 rm 125 questions

Good point on the flywheel key, chain too. Also on old bikes like that, the spark plug wires get hard and build up resistance or leak spark. Look at the wire and cap, could be those. Ed.

Re: 82 rm 125 questions

Also check the crank seals. They tend to dry up over age and can totally drive you insane with hard starting and poor idle perfomance. Good luck!
